Expert Adult Autism Assessment Process: Providing Care and Expertise

Symptoms of ASD can sometimes be seen as quirks or idiosyncrasies. Autistic individuals can often find ways to mask their difficulties or find strategies to manage their symptoms. All initial assessments are conducted in person at our Central London Clinic, and completed online.

Some common signs of ASD can be:

Getting very upset when there are minor changes in routine.

Intense interests that lead to social difficulties or interfere with daily life.

Struggling in social situations and making or keeping friends.

Being unable to understand body language or gestures

Unusual eye contact.

Interpreting information in a literal manner.

*A screening will not provide you with a diagnosis, a screening is a 1 hour session where we establish whether or not an assessment will be able to help you. The price your screening will be taken off the price of a full assessment if you decide to proceed with a full assessment.

What happens in this assessment?

Step 1

Pre-assessment information is gathered.
Information is gathered about your current circumstances and difficulties. An informant (parent/sibling/friend) will be asked to fill this in too.

Step 2

An ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) is conducted.
You will take part in tasks with a clinician as part of this observation.

Step 3

A clinical interview based on the ADI-R (Autism-Diagnostic Interview-Revised) is conducted.
A clinical interview takes place. This covers early milestones and asks about specific ASD symptoms. This can be completed with a parent or sibling. You can also complete this interview yourself if you do not have an informant. This takes 2-2.5 hours to complete and can be completed online.

Step 4

A clinician team meeting takes place.
The clinicians discuss whether you meet criteria for ASD. Recommendations are also suggested.

Step 5

Feedback session takes place including recommendations.
This feedback online meeting discusses whether you now have a diagnosis and what recommendations we have to help you.

Step 6

A report is delivered.

How is ASD diagnosed?

We use a clinical interview, the ADI-R, the ADOS-2 observation and informant information to see if you meet DSM criteria for ASD.

How long does the assessment process take?

The assessment process takes a matter of weeks. The exact length of time depends on your availability and ours.

Can an Adult ASD Assessment be completed remotely?

You can have all the appointments remotely except the ADOS-2 which is more effectively completed in person.
